After reading several academic papers from the early 1900’s related to my thesis, it was interesting to see so many
hand-drawn or hand-annotated graphs describing mining data. I wanted to incorporate the feeling brought on by the
rigid and ‘old-scientific’, yet organic quality of these papers in this work. The decision to use hands was inspired by the
different gestures we use to aid in conveying an idea or telling a story. This led naturally to exploring methods of
creating the unique Beaver Duck character through shadow casting gestures.
While it is difficult, it is possible to closely re-create this work through shadow-puppetry using this piece as a guide.
